Kanoya Magnetic Observatory

Absolute house of the Kanoya Magnetic Observatory

The Kanoya Magnetic Observatory was originally an earth current observation site for the purpose of earthquake prediction, and started life in 1946 at Miyakonojo (Miyazaki Prefecture). As a result of the growing electrical disturbances, the observatory was moved to Kanoya (Kagoshima Prefecture) in 1948, and earth current observation was started in 1949. Magnetic observation began in 1958 on the occasion of the International Geophysical Year (1957 - 1958). The Kanoya Magnetic Observatory was designated in 1975 as one of ten observatories worldwide selected to classify magnetic storms. The observatory also carries out geomagnetic observation around Asosan Volcano as part of research work for the prediction of volcanic eruptions.
