Abstract

It has been uncertain whether geomagnetic variations are associated with a solar eclipse. The uncertainty may be derived from lack of a reliable numerical model for yielding geomagnetic signatures associated with localized and temporal decrease in ionospheric conductivities occurring in a solar eclipse event.

Therefore, by using a newly developed integrated numerical model ? Atmospheric Global Circulation model combined with an ionospheric dynamo model and an ionospheric plasma circulation model ? we perform numerical studies of geomagnetic signatures in 2009 total solar eclipse event.

The simulation successfully reproduces geomagnetic Z variations observed at KNY. It is noteworthy that this is the first work in the world that confirms definitely geomagnetic variations caused by a solar eclipse based on a realistic numerical model.
