Chichijima Station

The Chichijima Station (on Chichijima Island among the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands) originated with preliminary magnetic observation in November 1970 during the International Years of Solar Activity (IASY: 1969 - 1971). The station was permanently assigned for the International Monitoring of the Sun-Earth Environment project (MONSEE: 1972 - 1979), alongside the Kakioka, Memambetsu and Kanoya Observatories. In January 1973, precise continuous observation of magnetic field variations was commenced. This unmanned station continuously collects data on geomagnetic pulsations, with data being sent via telephone lines to Kakioka for recording and processing. Instrument maintenance and absolute measurement are undertaken regularly by staff dispatched from Kakioka. The station yields important observation data for widespread reference regarding the southern part of Japan's territorial waters.
